The United States military is made up of six different branches, each with a unique mission and types of jobs. While they all serve to protect the country, they offer different experiences, training, and career opportunities.
What does it mean to serve in the military?
The military offers young adults the chance to serve their country while gaining valuable skills, training, and real-world experience. It can provide structure, steady pay, educational benefits, and opportunities to travel.
Military service involves committing to a period of training and service, during which individuals learn job-specific skills, follow a structured schedule, and work as part of a team. The military also offers pay, housing options, health care, and other benefits.
Training
The military offers a variety of training programs including ROTC, GI Bill, Green to Gold, and certifications, among others.
Education
The military can help pay for your education, student loans, and certifications so you’ll be set up for success at both your military job and your career after service.
Veteran Benefits
After you completing your service, you can qualify for benefits such as transition assistance, education and employment resources, health care, and counseling.
Branches of the Military
Army
The Army is the largest branch of the military. It focuses on land-based operations and includes a wide range of jobs, such as engineering, medical care, technology, and leadership roles.
Marine Corps
The Marine Corps is known for its focus on discipline, teamwork, and physical fitness. Marines are trained to respond quickly to conflicts and often work closely with the Navy.
Navy
The Navy operates on and under the sea. Sailors may work on ships, submarines, or at shore-based locations around the world. The Navy offers careers in areas like mechanics, aviation, healthcare, and communications.
Coast Guard
The Coast Guard focuses on maritime safety, security, and environmental protection. Its missions include search and rescue, law enforcement, and disaster response, often close to U.S. coastlines.
Air Force
The Air Force focuses on air and space operations. Many Air Force jobs involve advanced technology, aviation, cybersecurity, and engineering.
Space Force
The Space Force is the newest branch of the military and focuses on space-related operations. This includes satellite systems, cybersecurity, and protecting U.S. interests in space.
How Long is a Typical Military Career?
Most people who join the military sign an initial contract that lasts about 4–6 years of active duty. This allows service members to receive training, gain experience, and decide whether they want to continue. Others choose to stay in the military longer and make it a career (e.g. 20 years or more), which can qualify service members for retirement benefits.

Joining the military does not mean a lifetime commitment. The length depends on personal goals, opportunities, and choices made along the way.
